The Illinois Left Lane Law has been in effect since 2004, find out how it's become relevant again in news today.
Illinois State Police has multiple traffic laws that went into effect on January 1, 2004: Booster Seat Law, New Teen Drivers, Left Lane Law, and Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding. The Left Lane Law specifies that: "While traveling on an interstate highway, a vehicle may not be driven in the left lane, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle. This prohibition does not apply to authorized emergency vehicles while engaged in official duties."
The Left Lane Law has been in effect for 15 years, why is this law reemerging?
On January 3rd, 2019, Illinois State Police posted via Facebook, "Are YOU ready to stay out of the left lane of the interstate unless you're passing? Our Troopers are ready for it!!!" https://www.facebook.com/ISPDistrict10/posts/748617322190250
Illinois officers have decided to aggressively catch those driving slowly in the left lane and cite them with a $120 ticket. This law was made to prevent slow drivers from blocking faster traffic, avoid tailgating, and reduce driving to the right to pass.
This law does not apply when traffic is congested, there is extreme weather, construction, tollways, and left-hand exits.
In 2019, officers will use covert vehicles in order to prevent slow drivers in the left lane longer. Other laws that will be heavily reinforced this year are what Illinois State Police call the Fatal Four: texting and driving, speeding, no seatbelt, and drunk driving.
